What is Baseline Security Clearance?

A Baseline Security Clearance allows individuals to access information classified up to the PROTECTED level. It's the entry-level clearance in Australia, suitable for roles with limited exposure to sensitive information, typically in defence, government, and certain private sector roles that interact with classified data.

Why Would You Need Baseline Clearance?

Baseline clearance is required for positions that involve handling sensitive but lower-risk information. It's commonly needed in government roles, defence projects, and certain corporate environments connected to national security. Obtaining this clearance confirms your reliability for roles that involve safeguarding essential but not highly sensitive information.

The Baseline Clearance Process

The Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) manages the Baseline clearance process. It involves:

Application Submission: You'll provide personal background information, including work history and residential details.

Identity Verification: A 100-point ID check, as well as a National Police Clearance, confirms your identity and background.

Vetting Assessments: AGSVA conducts background and character assessments to ensure suitability, including checks for financial stability and personal reliability.

How Long Does It Take?

The Baseline clearance process typically takes a few weeks to a few months, depending on AGSVA's workload and the applicant's background complexity. It's advisable to apply early if your role requires this clearance to avoid delays.

What Does it Cost?

As of 2023-2024, the AGSVA fee for a Baseline clearance is AUD 884 (inclusive of GST). Responsibility for this fee lies with the applicant, payable upon clearance approval. Whilst employers may choose to cover this cost for their employees, sponsoring entities do not bear responsibility for clearance fees.

How Long is Baseline Clearance Valid?

A Baseline clearance is valid for 15 years, after which revalidation is required. During this period, holders must maintain eligibility by adhering to security protocols and reporting significant changes in personal circumstances that might affect their suitability.

Maintaining Baseline Clearance

Once granted, your clearance allows you to work in roles involving PROTECTED-level information. To maintain your clearance, you must report any major life changes (like overseas moves or changes in financial status) to AGSVA to ensure ongoing eligibility.
